Γένος κάκτων από την Βραζιλία, την Παραγουάη και την Βολιβία.
Το όνομα του γένους προέρχεται από την Ελληνική λέξη "Δίσκος" λόγο του σχήματος των φυτών.
Όταν τα φυτά φτάσουν σε ηλικία ανθοφορίας βγάζουν ένα "κεφάλι" ( Cephalium ) στη κορυφή τους από όπου βγαίνουν τα λουλούδια.
Τα μπουμπούκια του Discocactus εμφανίζονται το πρωί της ημέρας που θα ανθίσουν.
Η άνθηση γίνετε πάντα βραδυ και τα λουλούδια είναι αρωματικά.
Χαρακτηριστικό του γένους είναι η αντοχή των ειδών του στην φωτιά.
